A Moth to the Flame
Like moths to a flame we are sometimes drawn to destructive behaviours, both as a result of our subjective maladaptive coping mechanisms and as products of a society that sells us dangerous ideologies. So much of the individual goes into completing a life cycle, so much effort and heart. Like the moth, we find ourselves in states of transition; we seek safety, food, and love to ensure the survival of this generation and the next. Research shows an evolutionary change in the death-drawn tendencies of the moth.* Can we, too, evolve in similar ways? Can we bring an end to our self-destructive behaviours as individuals and as nations?
In this suspended fibre art sculpture I offer a handmade cocoon in which one can safely rest and contemplate concepts of need, want, and habit.
